Choosing the right leather for your chesterfield sofa
There are many considerations to take into account when choosing your new chesterfield sofa or chair such as, what style to go for and what wood to choose for the frame, but one of the most difficult and often most important is the leather choice.
The traditional and still most popular colours used on a chesterfield sofa and chair are antique green, antique red and antique brown, but this doesn’t always suit your room or your taste. Luckily, nowadays you can choose from over 40 different leather colours and three different types of leather, Antique, Premium and Hand Dyed; all of which are incredibly strong and give unique characteristics.
Antique leather is the standard finish for a chesterfield sofa and chair and is blacked before being upholstered to the chair. Once assembly has finished the leather is lightly rubbed by a skilled craftsman; this removes the black and reveals the colour underneath, giving it an antique and traditional look.
Premium leather has a finer grain than Antique leather and is treated with a blend of natural products to produce a soft finish. Premium leather is a semi-aniline leather and is usually used for lighter colours such as White, Buckskin and Hare.
Hand Dyed leather is the most exclusive finish for a chesterfield sofa or chair and is a full aniline leather. It uses only the finest cowhide and is dyed and buffed by hand to provide a smooth and deeply coloured finish. This leather is found on the most expensive and custom made chesterfield furniture.
